Meet Dr. Husein Poonawala
The training, clinical philosophy, and career arc that define how vein care
is delivered at The Vein Clinic of Dallas.
The Story Behind the Practice
Dr. Husein Poonawala’s path to medicine is not a typical one, and it shaped everything about how he practices.
He began his academic journey at Purdue University, where he studied Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering and graduated with high honors. Drawn by a longstanding interest in flight, he chose one of the most rigorous technical disciplines in the country. That experience shaped a mindset centered on precision, structure, and getting things right the first time.
Over time, his interests shifted toward work that allowed for a more direct impact on people. He went on to medical school, where he graduated near the top of class, and discovered Vascular and Interventional Radiology. The field’s minimally invasive, image-guided approach offered a thoughtful way to treat complex conditions, often allowing patients to recover quickly and return to their daily lives with minimal disruption.
It was a natural transition. The same principles that drew him to engineering carried over into medicine, where careful planning, technical accuracy, and sound judgment are essential to achieving the right outcome for each patient.
During his residency at LSU Health Shreveport, his work led to acceptance into the Vascular and Interventional Radiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital – Harvard Medical School. There, he trained alongside leaders in the field, further refining the level of precision and clinical decision-making that now guide his approach to vein care.
Credentials & Certification
Vascular & Interventional Radiology fellowship at one of the most competitive catheter-based medicine programs in the United States. The technical and diagnostic foundation behind every procedure performed at The Vein Clinic of Dallas.
Board certification from the ABR reflects demonstrated mastery of vascular and interventional procedures, including the advanced imaging and catheter techniques that are central to safe, precise vein treatment.
The ABVLM Diplomate designation is not required to practice vein care. Earning it reflects a specific commitment to demonstrated mastery of venous and lymphatic disease, distinguishing physicians who have made venous medicine a genuine specialty.
From Fellowship to Private Practice
After completing his fellowship at Harvard, Dr. Poonawala joined a busy vascular and interventional radiology practice in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he served as a managing partner. In this setting, he performed a high volume of advanced catheter-based procedures across the full breadth of the specialty, from complex peripheral arterial interventions to advanced venous procedures. He quickly became the go-to vein specialist in the region, known for his thoughtful treatment plans and novel techniques.
That experience built something that cannot be taught in training alone: procedural fluency and clinical judgment. It also gave him an unambiguous picture of what was consistently missing in how vein care was being delivered at scale.
Volume-driven practices, delegated evaluations, and templated treatment plans were producing patients who were treated but not genuinely cared for. Diagnoses were being made efficiently rather than thoroughly. Follow-up was absent or inconsistent. Patients were leaving without a real understanding of what had been done or why.
Having performed thousands of procedures and seen the full picture of what high-volume practice looked like, Dr. Poonawala founded The Vein Clinic of Dallas to demonstrate a different model: one where the physician is present throughout, the diagnostic process is thorough rather than efficient, and the care relationship extends over time rather than ending at discharge.

What Patients Experience
Patients consistently describe leaving consultations with a clear understanding of their own venous health, not a recommendation handed to them on the way out. Questions are answered. Findings are explained.
Nothing is scheduled without full understanding of what was found and why treatment is recommended. The unhurried, physician-directed consultation is the standard at every visit, for every patient.
The physician who evaluates you is the same physician who treats you and reviews your follow-up imaging. That continuity is intentional, with one clinician maintaining the same standard of care year after year.
