Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is a physician-performed injection
technique that uses a specialized sclerosant foam to collapse and eliminate

Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy works by introducing a specially
formulated sclerosant foam directly into a target vein under real-time duplex
ultrasound visualization. The foam displaces blood within the vessel, contacts
the vein wall along its length, and causes it to collapse and be permanently
eliminated. The treated vein is then gradually absorbed by the body as blood
reroutes through healthy adjacent vessels.
The ultrasound guidance is what distinguishes this technique from surface-
level injections. By visualizing the vein in real time during the injection, the
physician can confirm precise foam delivery into the correct vessel, monitor
its behavior within the vein, and avoid inadvertent treatment of vessels that do
not warrant it. Foam sclerotherapy treats the tributary varicose veins,

Foam sclerotherapy is recommended when a diagnostic duplex ultrasound confirms
tributary varicose veins or perforators that are contributing to symptoms and are not
expected to self-resolve after source vein treatment.
Tributary varicose veins that are smaller or more branching than can be addressed by microphlebectomy but too deep or tortuous to treat with surface injection alone

The target vein is identified and confirmed under duplex ultrasound with the patient positioned to reflect real- life venous function.
The skin over the injection site is cleaned. Minimal skin-level numbing at the entry point is used when needed. No tumescent anesthesia is required.
A fine needle is introduced into the target vessel under ultrasound guidance, ensuring precise placement into the correct vein.
A precisely prepared sclerosant foam is injected into the vein, displacing blood and contacting the vein wall along its entire length.
The foam causes the vessel wall to collapse and be permanently eliminated. Blood flow immediately reroutes to healthy adjacent veins.
